Who We Are
An independent automotive publication helping owners understand service, maintenance, and the specialists who keep exotic cars running.
An Independent Publication, Owned by No Shop
Caliper & Crankcase Report is an independent automotive publication founded on the principle that exotic car ownership should be informed, not mystified. We have spent years evaluating service practices, interviewing technicians, and observing how the best shops in New England handle high-performance vehicles. Our background spans automotive engineering, technical journalism, and hands-on experience with Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati service.
We publish because we found that owners and enthusiasts have nowhere to turn for honest, detailed guidance on specialist care. We are not part of any dealership network, parts supplier, or service facility. This independence lets us ask the hard questions about methodology, credentials, and outcomes.
Time at the Facility, Then the Checklist
Our assessment process is systematic and grounded in what actually matters to an owner. We spend time at each facility, observe the workflow, examine the diagnostics protocol, and speak with customers. The standard we apply is straightforward: does this operation demonstrate mastery of the vehicle, accountability to the customer, and a commitment to doing the work correctly the first time?
- Verification of credentials. We confirm that technicians hold ASE certifications, brand-specific training, or documented experience with the marque.
- Diagnostic rigor. We observe whether the shop uses factory-grade diagnostic equipment and interprets the data correctly before recommending work.
- Documentation and transparency. We assess whether the shop provides detailed written estimates and clear documentation of the work performed.
- Parts sourcing and warranty. We verify whether the facility uses OEM or specification-grade parts, and whether work carries a meaningful warranty.
- Customer outcomes. We speak with owners about their experience, asking whether the problem was solved and whether they would return.
The Words We Use When Judging a Shop
We use a small vocabulary to describe what excellence looks like in exotic car service. These terms appear throughout our work and carry specific meaning when you are evaluating a facility.
- Marque knowledge
- The technician understands the vehicle's design philosophy, has worked on that model, and recognizes what is normal and what is a warning sign.
- Diagnostic discipline
- The shop connects the right diagnostic tool, reads the complaint correctly, and tests the hypothesis before opening the car.
- Specification compliance
- Work is performed to manufacturer specifications: torque values, fluid grades, alignment parameters, and testing procedures are followed exactly.
- Accountability
- The facility stands behind its work with a warranty, communicates clearly during the job, and addresses concerns without defensiveness.
- Transparent pricing
- The estimate is itemized, hours are justified, parts are specified, and unexpected discoveries are communicated before the work scope expands.
An Unaffiliated Voice for a Small Community
-
Independent Authority
Owners need an unaffiliated voice they can trust to cut through dealership marketing and forum hype.
-
Specialist Knowledge
Exotic cars are not mass-market vehicles. The person who knows Ferraris is not the person who knows Subarus.
-
Verification, Not Opinion
We observe facilities, test their claims, and speak with customers. This makes our recommendations worth something.
-
Marque Community
Exotic car owners are a small community. Word of mouth matters. We publish that judgment in one place.
